Pedigree Sales

McCartneys’s Pedigree Sales offer a premier platform for buying and selling high-quality pedigree livestock. With a reputation for excellence, our sales attract top breeders and buyers from across the country.

Pedigree Centre, based at Worcester

McCartneys main Pedigree Centre is based at Worcester under the supervision of new Head of Pedigree Sales James Amphlett. James specialises in Pedigree Livestock and has taken on the role from Clive Roads, who will continue to assist James. McCartneys are very well respected within the Pedigree sector and have a sound base of contacts. We are Official Auctioneers for many Societies and currently act for over 25 cattle and sheep breed societies.

Worcester Market is ideally situated in the Midlands and adjacent to the M5 motorway, which gives us excellent transport links. The Market has excellent facilities and are now able to offer Live Streaming of sales along with online bidding being available. Other Pedigree Sales are held at Brecon & Ludlow Livestock Markets, with Production & Dispersal Sales held on farms across the country. A personal service is always on offer and a full back up of knowledgeable, keen and enthusiastic staff are always available.

Introducing the McCartneys team.

James Amphlett

Associate Partner, Chair of Agricultural Department & Auctioneer

James Amphlett

James joined McCartneys in 2017 after completing his degree at Harper Adams University, in which he spent his placement year based at Worcester Market. Originally James comes from Brecon where his family farm a successful flock of Pedigree Charollais sheep as well as flocks of Texel x ewes and Cheviot ewes.

Sports have always been a big passion of James’ and he played rugby for Brecon RFC from a very young age. He was also lucky enough to attend the noted Christ College Brecon School on a sports scholarship where he played vast amounts of rugby and cricket.

James is now responsible for the day to day running of Worcester Market where he sells the cull ewes along with all forms of store sheep and breeding sheep, and calves. He also sells pedigree sheep at society sales is responsible for entries and catalogues at Worcester.

Clive Roads

Consultant

Clive Roads

Clive joined McCartneys in 1984 from Leamington Spa based Pedigree Livestock auctioneers, John Thornborrow & Co. It was at this time that McCartneys took over Worcester Market where Clive has been based ever since. He has seen the market move out of Worcester City Centre to an excellent location adjacent to the M5 motorway.

He has previously been responsible for the day to day running of Worcester, as well as seasonal pedigree sales at Brecon and other venues throughout the Country.

He joined the full partnership in 1989 and has been largely responsible for the increase in Society pedigree sales for most of the cattle and sheep breed societies, several of these breeds having national sales at Worcester or Brecon.

In 2019 he was privileged to receive a “Lifetime Achievement Award at the National Farming Awards.

In 2021 he stood down as a partner and Chairman of the firm and now acts as a Consultant still being involved in Worcester market, Farm Sales, Valuation Work and Rural professional matters.

He is a Monitor Valuer for the Welsh Assembly Government to oversee TB Valuations throughout Wales.

Over the years he has been privileged to judge cattle and sheep classes at most County Shows, in fact judging, at the Royal Welsh and the Royal Show on three occasions. Other connections with the livestock sector includes Chairing the NBA Beef Expo committee at the Three Counties Showground, at Malvern and he is also Chairman of Council of the Three Counties Agricultural Society.

His “good looks” have been moulded by a rugby career that took him to County level and he dines out on the fact that he was “the best back row forward never to play for England” (as quoted by an ex England International)!

Apart from his involvement in country sports Clive is keen on genealogy with a family tree tracing back to 1532 – in his words “plenty of history but not much money”.
