Hedgerow Management Rules in England
No cutting or trimming hedgerows from 1st March – 31st August unless an exemption applies.
Exemptions include:
• Public/Private rights of way
• Dead or diseased hedgerows
• Required works by a statutory body
• Private garden boundaries
• Risk to plant, animal or human health
• Weed or pest control
Keep records of any exempt work and remember wildlife protection laws still apply.
August exception: If your next rotation includes planting oilseed rape or temporary grass and your internal hedges need trimming, the RPA will need notifying before trimming the hedge. Our rural team can assist in applying for a derogation (written permission) from the RPA.
