Brecon Market in Powys sell over 3000 horses and ponies annually and offers a modern market with excellent facilities, located adjacent to the junction of the A470 and A40 roundabout next to Brecon Town.

To enter an equine in the forthcoming sale, please click Sales Dates below.

Please note entries close 10 days prior to the sale date. After this time, late entry fees will apply. Please contact the relevant market by phone to enter and pay.

Foals sold with their mothers must have a passport and be microchipped. Foals can be sold on their own, providing they are at least four months of age and must have a passport and be microchipped.

Vendors please make sure an accurate description is put on the entry form. Any further information must be announced on the day of sale in the ring by the Auctioneer if anything has changed or been missed.

Selling at Brecon

Vendors

  • Please make sure all passports and microchips correspond to the correct entry.
  • Entry for lorries and vehicles towing a trailer will be through the top gate and you will be required to provide passports for ALL horses & ponies at the unloading bays.
  • Once you have unloaded, please remove your vehicle off the unloading bay as soon as possible.
  • All Horse & Ponies will be scanned at the unloading bay. Passports and microchips will be checked and lot numbers allocated.
  • If you wish to place a reserve on your lot(s) please complete a reserve form which can be obtained from the market on the day of sale and hand into the office or to an Auctioneer prior to your lot(s) being offered.
  • Please ensure an accurate description is on the entry form. Any further information must be announced on the day of sale in the ring by the auctioneer if anything has changed or been missed.
  • Catalogues can be viewed and downloaded from the website or picked up at the market on the day of the sale.
  • Sale proceeds will be paid within 14 days of the sale date. If you wish to be paid by BACS please pick up a form from the market office and complete on the day of the sale.

Comission

  • The Seller will pay to the Auctioneer a commission of 5% of the hammer price of each Lot plus VAT with a minimum commission of £10 plus VAT per lot.
  • Where a horse is “Bought In” the Seller will pay a minimum commission fee of £100 plus VAT or 5% of the hammer price (whichever is the greater).
  • Commission is payable in full by the Seller to the Auctioneers even if a horse is subsequently returned by the Buyer to the Seller in accordance with the complaints procedure hereunder or for any other reason.
  • In the event that a horse is sold subject to veterinary examination and in the event that a horse is returned by the Buyer in accordance with a veterinary certificate obtained within the warranty period, then the Seller shall pay to the Auctioneer a commission of 3% of the gross sale price plus VAT.
  • Any private sale made on the day of sale must be booked through the Auctioneers.

Saddlery & Tools

  • Lots must be pre-entered with the market office and entries close 8 days before the sale.
  • Vendors & purchasers please note all items in the sale will be made secure by McCartneys staff up to 2pm on sale day. After this time lots become the sole responsibility of the purchaser. No refunds or allowances will be made if lots are missing.

Phillip Blackman Howard

Phillip joined McCartneys in 2010 as a member of the rural team and became an Associate Partner in 2012. With an in depth understanding of the Herefordshire region, where he resides, Phillip has built long-standing relationships with a wide range of clients. Based at McCartneys’ head office at Ludlow Livestock Market, his diverse role covers a broad spectrum of professional services within the rural sector, including:

• Equine Sales: As Head of McCartneys Equine, Phillip is heavily involved in equine sales, including the monthly Horse and Pony sales at Brecon and Worcester Markets as well as annual official society sales, stud reduction and dispersal sales and undertaking insurance valuations and dispute resolutions.
• Specialist Breed Societies: Phillip works with several prominent equine breed societies, including the Welsh Pony and Cob Society, the Shetland Pony Stud Book Society, Standardbred Horses, Connemara Society UK, Hackney Horse Society, providing expert advice and facilitating sales and events.
• Farm & Land Services: Phillip’s professional work extends to the sale and letting of farms and land. He also manages the Honeybourne Sheep Sale in August and supports other annual events such as the Welsh Winter Fair and various summer shows.
• Antiques & Furniture Sales: In addition to his rural expertise, Phillip oversees the monthly sales of antiques and furniture at the Portcullis Sale Room in Ludlow, contributing to the firm’s wide-ranging auction services.

Finished Sheep, Cull Cow, Cattle & Horse Auctioneer Lloyd has been with the firm for 6 years and has spent the last 5 years based at the Knighton office but also working from the McCartneys office in Newtown. Over his time in McCartneys Lloyd has focussed his efforts on the Livestock Markets and Rural Professional work however has also spent time in the residential sales and lettings departments. However, Lloyd’s roots have always been firmly in the agricultural sector, and this made him jump at the opportunity as soon as the job became available at Brecon Market. He hopes that he will have a long and successful career at Brecon.

Upon leaving Harper Adams University College with a 2:1 BSc (Hons) Degree in Rural Enterprise and Land Management, Jenny joined McCartneys in 1999 at their Knighton Office and Livestock Market. Striving to be one of the first female livestock auctioneers in the country, she quickly began to sell at weekly finished markets, fortnightly store markets and farm dispersal sales.

While expanding the large range of Rural Professional work within Mid Wales and the borders, she became a Member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and a Fellow of the Central Association of Agricultural Valuers. Her favourite part of the job is to see a good result for a client. She says “the hardest jobs are always the best when they work out right”. Jenny is also a RICS independent Expert Witness and has acted in Rural Valuations on many disputes. Jenny completes over 120 BPS applications, many of which are cross border applicants together with a large range of Compensation work recently including the Elan Valley Aqueduct Rehabilitation works. Jenny is also a Fellow of the Livestock Auctioneers Association and became an Equity and LLP Partner of McCartneys in 2006.

She lives with her husband Richard and son Tommy on the family farm at Vowchurch. She enjoys playing hockey for Kington Ladies Hockey Club when times allows and enjoys supporting and judging YFC Competitions.

Member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (MRICS), Fellow of the Central Association of Agricultural Valuers (FAAV), Fellow of the Livestock Auctioneers Association (FLAA) and registered by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors as an Expert Witness, Qualified in the Rural Divisions of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, with in excess of 10 years’ post qualification experience specialising in the RICS faculties of Rural Property, Dispute Resolution and Rural Land & Property Jenny is fully conversant with the RICS Practice Statement & Guidance Notes “Surveyors acting as Expert Witnesses”, the Civil Procedure Rules – Part 35, the “Civil Justice Experts‚ Protocol” and has considerable experience in preparing Expert Witness Reports.

Jenny also has the practical experience of Livestock, both cattle and sheep, from selling on a weekly basis at Knighton market.
